Artist Short Statement

I haven't been working on any film and photo projects for the last few years. The passings of my amazing mom Teresa Roman and my best Friend Nelson Bermudez took a toll on me to a state of shock and sadness. And suddenly when you are coming to terms slowly, visiting a therapist, and coming out slowly, life hits you with a third strike. My dad, two weeks ago had a hemorrhagic stroke, and right now he is in coma in Puerto Rico. They called my sister and I to sign paperworks to get him out of life support. That is something I just don't believe in. As I write this I am ready to head to Puerto Rico to see my dad one last time.  Life is never promised tomorrow.

Update My dad passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2019 - 4:28pm

The Bronx River Art Center presents:

“KNOW WHO YOU ARE AT EVERY AGE”
by Q_RAIDER with BDGRMMR
Session Four of our Curatorial Practice Series
WHEN: April 4 - April 26
Opening Reception Friday April 4th from 6-9pm
WHERE: 305 East 140th Street (off Alexander Avenue)

This non-thematic group exhibition is the result of a collaborative project initiated by Q_Raider, a curatorial platform as public profile representing the nascent Office of Curatorial Work founded by independent curator Edwin Ramoran. For the Bronx River Art Center’s Curatorial Practice Series, Q_Raider has chosen to focus on mentorship to individuals and collectives eager to learn the logistics of a gallery space. For this session, Q_Raider has enlisted artist collective BDGRMMR to layout the exhibition.
KNOW WHO YOU ARE AT EVERY AGE introduces and acknowledges a hefty number of works and things by artists who cross generations, disciplines and cultural specificities. Together, Q_Raider and BDGRMMR hope to facilitate discussion around white cube politics as well as invite the public to ask questions about the artworks and things on view, instilling gallery visitors with power and confidence when they may feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

BDGRMMR (pronounced Bad Grammar) is a New York City-based artist collective founded by multimedia artist Yulan Grant, writer Justin Allen and sound artist Brandon Owens (NU GROWTH). Taking its name from assumptions of inarticulacy that surround Black diasporic language, their eponymous zine explores race, gender and sexuality at their intersection through interviews, profiles, poetry and graphic design.

Q_Raider and BDGRMMR will be available for public and private discussions and workshops about the exhibition. Dates for public events and happenings will be available on the website. You may also email Karine Duteil Kduteil@bronxriverart.org for inquiries.

KNOW WHO YOU ARE AT EVERY AGE is tripartite:
1) Art for All Ages and For Shows introduce works on loan from individuals or collectives, or being presented specifically during the run of this group exhibition.
2) S/O (shout outs) is comprised of things courtesy the Office of Curatorial Work and unearthed for public sharing and access.
3) The History of Storytelling is a reading rainbow courtesy the Office of Curatorial Work and comprised of “ephemeranema” such as VHS videotapes, books, CDs and DVDs, pamphlets, mail, stuff you keep in Manila folders, music, and comic books. Gallery visitors are encouraged to take time to get into it.

ANTONIO VICENTY SOLO EXHIBITION:
Project Room: February 6-May 1, 2013

Antonio Vicenty, Plastic Masked Kids, 2011, Digital Photograph

Curated by Longwood Arts Project, this exhibition is Vicenty’s first solo exhibition of his recent experimental film and photography. Inspired by his early childhood in Puerto Rico where he visited funeral homes and walked cemeteries with his family to bury their loved ones, he uses the props, images, visual effects and photography from his infatuation with horror films resulting in experimental photography and films that are eerie, mysterious and scary, with elements of horror, fantasy, everyday fears and the inevitable fact of death through artificial, surreal and dreamlike means.

About the Curator

Antonio Vicenty is a Bronx filmmaker and photographer whose major influences were Italian and US horror films from the 1970s and 1980s. Films by such genre notables as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, Lucio Fulci, David Lynch, and George A. Romero inspired Vicenty’s work that use images of graveyards, children in Halloween masks, and old dolls to explore personal narratives, sexuality, and gender identity. He was the recipient of BCA’s prestigious BRIO award in 2006. His documentary and narrative films have been included in festivals and exhibitions throughout the United States and London. Vicenty currently lives and works in the Bronx.
